Donald can trace his entrepreneurial roots to his mother, who operated her own small business as a single mom. When he started his professional career, Donald co-founded Keystone Staffing with his mother, leaning on her business experience to guide them. Donald eventually moved on to another staffing company, where he met Ryan Clark. In 2005, the pair founded PeopleShare, the staffing firm where Donald serves as co-CEO. The business has grown to one of the 100 largest staffing companies in the country and has been recognized on the Inc. 500 and Best Places to Work lists multiple times. Along the way, PeopleShare acquired companies in Virginia, Illinois, and North Carolina, and now operates in 8 states with more than 40 offices. The company aims to grow to 49 offices this year through organic growth and acquisitions. “We’re going to add companies to our portfolio that fit our niche business model,” the company said. Company leaders envision growing to 75 offices and $375 million in revenue in the next five years. The culture built under Donald’s leadership makes PeopleShare stand out, Donald’s team said. “Dave believes in investing in our employees and creating a culture of innovation where employees’ ideas and feedback are heard and taken seriously,” his team said. “Last year, PeopleShare started paying back employees’ student loans — $250/month directly to the lender. We’re one in 1,000 companies that pay student loans to this level. This year, PeopleShare saw a drastic increase in the cost of medical benefits, like many businesses did. Not 1% of that increase was passed onto employees. When the HR director presented Dave with the news of the increase, his response was immediate and simple: ‘PeopleShare will pick up 100% of the increase.’” PeopleShare has received numerous awards and recognitions under Donald’s leadership, including Forbes 2021 America’s Best Temporary Staffing Firms, Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Private Companies, Philadelphia Business Journal’s Best Places to Work for 10 consecutive years, and Inc.     Ace The Interview Job Interviews 101: How to Ace 5 Key Questions Every Recruiter Will Ask Ace The Interview Job Interviews 101: How to Ace 5 Key Questions Every Recruiter Will Ask Question: Tell Me About Yourself Abby Ludens, a recruiter with Mattress Firm, always starts with this: “Tell me about yourself, and by that, I mean tell me about your background, your experience and highlight anything you’d like to share and we’ll go from there.” This is the most common interview question, and it’s the one where so many people get tongue-tied. This isn’t your life story, nor should it be too personal. Your answer should reflect your professional side and it should directly tie into the position you’re seeking. Sell yourself for his particular job by highlighting that you have the skills the role requires. Let’s say it’s a retail sales position. Your response may be, “I’ve spent the last six years in retail sales. Before that, I worked in call center customer service, and I found that what I liked most — and where I really excelled — was in working face to face with customers. I’m an exceptional communicator, I connect well with the people I’m serving, and I’m very goal-oriented so I thrive on meeting and, many times exceeding, sales targets. In fact, in my last position, I was the top salesperson at my location for 10 out of 12 months.” And then, if possible, end on a smart question: “I’m curious how sales excellence is measured here?” Question: What is your greatest weakness? Another common question along these lines: What’s your greatest weakness? Avoid generic statements like, “I work too hard. I care too much.” That won’t go over well. Focus on a genuine weakness, but one that won’t prevent you from getting this job. For example, “I haven’t had a lot of experience with public speaking before large groups, so I don’t feel my best when giving big presentations. It’s a skill that I’d like to build on so I’ve enrolled in a course or I’m hoping I’ll have a chance to build this skill here.” Another example: “I’ve had trouble in the past with managing e-mail — instead of allowing it to manage me and monopolize my time. It’s so easy to get distracted by the pressure to respond instantly when e-mails pop into your inbox, but I’m learning that the best time management rules dictate that it’s best to check and respond to e-mail at designated times instead of every minute of the day. That’s helped me to be far more productive than ever before, and it’s a work in progress that I’m constantly aware of.” Maybe there’s a technical skill you need improvement with. Just be sure to show how you’re working on this objective. Question: What do you know about us? Jim Thomason, vice president of human resources for Nashville-based Thomas Nelson, a publishing company, usually asks candidates what they know about this company. This question gets at whether you really want to work here — or if you’re looking for any job with any employer. Do you know the bare bones or can you demonstrate a depth of knowledge? Too often candidates don’t do the research, or they assume the interviewer shares whatever they need to know about the organization. Wrong. The best answer will allow you to show off your research — it’ll be clear that you’ve done your homework because you know the company, its history, the trends impacting the industry in which it operates, and its top competitors. This shows you’re very interested in this employer, not just any company. Question: What is your five-year plan? Another common one that so many people dread: Where you do see yourself in five years? Wrong answers: In your job, on the beach, anywhere but here — even if that’s how you really feel. Or you feel like saying none of us can predict tomorrow; how can we possibly know what’s five years ahead of us. Not good either. The answer should reflect growth with that company. “I’d like to become the best sales person in the company and help train other sales leaders. I’d like to be the best science teacher in this school system to enable our classrooms to be used as a model of excellence.” If it’s a small company, you may try: “I’d very much like to help build this company’s bottom line so I’m able to take advantage of the great opportunities that a growing company has to offer.” Question: How do you handle high-pressure moments? At accounting giant Ernst & Young, Larry Nash, national recruiting director, is fond of asking, “Tell me about the most high-pressure situation you’ve dealt with in the past six months.” These days many examples may come to mind. We all face challenges on the job and in life, but we don’t all handle them the same way. Questions like this one are looking for specific anecdotes and situations, not hypotheticals. What you did in the past, not what you might do in the future. No matter what your response, interviewers are looking for how you handle change, how adaptable you are, your thought process, and your decision-making skills, especially since you’ll be faced with the need to make regular decisions on the job. If you’ve been at work, your answer may reflect a tight deadline you had to meet — one that was perhaps sprung on you with little notice. Or maybe you’ve witnessed layoffs and you’ve had to absorb twice as much work with half the staff. If the question specifies six months and you’ve been out of work during that time, then your answer will reflect a personal challenge. Did you have to make a big decision about the medical care of a family member? How did you go about weighing the options before making a decision? Have you faced a financial challenge? Without divulging information that’s too personal — and may reflect poorly on your candidacy — think about how to best answer. Recently a job seeker told me that her most intense moment came at Christmas time. Since both she and her husband have been out of work, they didn’t want to splurge on their annual holiday vacation, yet they also wanted to shield their kids from any kind of financial burden. They weighed the options and realized financial responsibility takes precedent–and they wound up planning an exciting holiday at home. Everyone was happy. That shows she made a logical decision, not one rooted in emotions of guilt — and not one where she threw caution to the wind. And she was careful to weigh the feelings and opinions of everyone involved, not just herself. Furthermore, she’s not crying woe is me, which is important. She’s showing that she’s a real problem solver. Tips For Job Seekers Now that you have assessed your skills and prepared your resume, it’s time to ace that interview! Dress Tips: Dress Professionally It’s better to overdress than underdress for a job interview. Always wear clean, pressed and neat clothing that fits well. Resume Tips A well-constructed resume effectively makes a case for hiring you. 10 Tips For a Great Resume A thoughtful, carefully constructed resume, using the information you have obtained through research about a specific company and industry, does more than ensure that you get an opportunity to interview. It also prepares you for the interview and will contribute to your ability to effectively make a case for hiring you, allowing you to close the deal! Each resume should be tailored to the job you are applying for. Broad or generic resumes may (by luck) get you an interview, but they will not prepare you for answering tough or specific questions when you get there. 1 Get the employer’s attention The easiest way to get an employer’s attention is to include in your summary the exact skills requested in the employer’s job announcement. The use of keywords at the very beginning of a resume will capture the employer’s attention. Conversely, using a variety of skills that are unrelated to the position will detract from your value, not add to it. Using the employer’s specific words will ensure you get attention, while paraphrasing with other languages can be disadvantageous. Tagging “hard” (technical) skills on at the end of the resume may work for recruiters’ electronic searches, but when the recipient/screener is actually reading your resume, your most important skills may be overlooked. 2 Clearly state your skills Having the right hard skills will determine if the employer will read further. “Soft” skills are important but very difficult to measure/prove. In many cases, employers assume you have related soft skills until they learn otherwise. Typically, soft skills can only really be determined with proof (quantifiable results) or when the employer actually meets you. 3 Support your claims with facts If you have stated a skill in the summary portion of your resume, you need to support it through an example of your related accomplishment in the experience portion of your resume, whether you are using a functional or chronological resume format. Describing a specific incident, event, work experience, or project will show evidence or “prove” you have a specific skill. Fancy language may appear engaging, but for the discerning decision maker, it does not take the place of facts. Facts sell. Using concrete examples in your resume will also prepare you for your interview. Using vague statements may get you in the door, but at some point, you will have to come up with specifics to make it real. Better to do it now than assume you will be able to produce supporting details on cue during and interview without preparation. 4 Provide examples of quantifiable results Avoid generalities or broad statements. Stick with numbers, percentages, specific outcomes or descriptions of a process. Stating that you produced “extremely positive results,” or that you “greatly improved performance” is vague. You need to include: by what measurement, in what time frame, and compared to what? 5 Tell the employer what you can do for the organization Make sure that you are using work examples that are similar to their business needs. Define the scope of your work with the scope of the employer’s work in mind. Expecting the employer to interpret is a risky undertaking. Screeners look for candidates that are “the same” as the job announcement. With enough easily identified “qualified” candidates, employers will not try to interpret, translate or understand the experience that is not the same as their request. 6 Speak the employer’s language Make it easy for the employer to relate to your value by using relevant terminology. Omit any unrecognizable acronyms or industry-specific language that employers will not recognize or identify with. 7 Create a good flow The flow of your information should be logical and compel the reader to continue reading. Bouncing from idea to idea without a natural progression will lose the reader’s attention. Grouping similar work examples or related outcomes is easier for the reader to follow. 8 Avoid redundancy When you repeat skills that you have stated in your summary in the body of your resume, make sure you have added information by attaching them to a result, outcome, or specific event, rather than simply re-stating them. 9 Make your resume reader friendly If you are interested in making information stand out, using white space is more effective than underlining or using italics. Italics and underlining are hard on the reader’s eyes when employers may be reviewing hundreds of resumes daily. Starting with no less than an inch margin around the border of your resume allows the reader to focus on the center. Use white space to make headings and titles stand out. 10 Have someone proof your work Friends and family can proof for typos and grammatical errors. They can also tell you if your resume is pleasing to the eye. However, they cannot tell you whether or not it will be effective. Typically only the person screening your resume or a hiring manager in your specific industry will truly know if it is an effective resume.
